Thursday the Los Angeles Angels announced Kendry Morales would be on the injured reserve list due to surgery on the slugger’s broken leg.
Morales injured the leg during a game-winning celebration at home plate after he hit a walk-off homerun.
According to the Angels’ website, the 26-year-old Cuban-born first baseman has surgery to repair damage done after the May 29 accident. The team has not released a timetable for Morales’ return to baseball activities.
Los Angeles manager Mike Scioscia said Morales would be out for the season after the Angels fell to the Oakland A’s 6-1 Thursday.
The Angels’ batting lineup will miss Morales’ team-leading .290 batting average, 11 homeruns and 39 RBIs.
The freak accident occurred when Morales landed awkwardly on home plate after rounding the bases and jumped into the traditional, rowdy celebration at home plate after a game-winning run.
