Futuristic thriller, “Inception” remained number one in the North American box office and claimed top spot across the globe after overtaking “Toy Story 3″.
The movie , starring Leonardo DiCaprio as a thief who steals secrets from within people’s subconscious, sold $27.5 million worth of tickets during a three day period beginning on Friday throughout the USA and Canada.
It’s domestic takings rose to $193.3 million and distributor Warner Bros were confident this figure would increase to around the $300 million mark.
The movie raked in $53.7 million from 51 countries around the world, taking it’s foreign total to $170 million and opened as Germany’s number one, taking $7.1 million.
It held firm against “Dinner for Schmucks” which opened to $23.3 million across North America.
The movie, starring Steve Carrell, met earnings expectations in-line with Carrell’s previous movie “Date Night” in April but still slightly down from the $25 million that opened with.
One movie that bombed, however, was the expensive Warner Bros 3D family-orientated sequel “Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore” which could only muster fifth place and take just $12.5 million.
This figure was well below the $20 million Time Warner Inc had anticipated it would open with.
The original “Cats & Dogs”, released in 2001, opened to $22 million and the sequel had the additional benefit of premium 3D pricing as well as overall higher ticket prices.
A psychological melodarama, “Charlie St Cloud”, starring Zac Efron, opened in sixth place with $12.1 million and is expected to perform well midweek.
Angelina Jolie thriller “Salt”, which opened at number two last weekend, moved down one place with $19.3 million, taking it’s total earnings to $70.8 million.
Internationally, “Toy Story 3″, slipped to number two with $39.1 million across 48 countries, taking it’s total earnings to $434.6 million. The Disney movie was number one in the UK for a second successive weekend, taking approximately $61 million.
